Actually, I've pretty much decided to go "pet-less" on the Rogue. The Ranger tank pet is a boar... There's a wolf pet but he has absolutely NO ability to maintain aggro.... I'm spoiled from playing a CH and a Hunter in WoW... I want the pet I want. So, I'm trying a Riftstalker/Bard/Bladedancer role and liking it quite well all the way up to level 12.

The rifts are less "optional" if you are in a major invasion or an event -- if you don't take 'em out they WILL overrun the area making it impossible to quest there. The quests are quests -- the lore is pretty good. There are some "just for fun" quests in the College area Silverwood that are quite well done. Not the the new goblin starting area of Cataclysm fun, but fun nevertheless. There's additional quest text available if you want it, but you can skip it if you don't. What I'm liking is the soul system. While I have no doubt that the min-maxers will have the "best" combos figured out very shortly, the possibility does exist that you can create a unique character. Whether the min-maxers will allow you to group with them is another question. So far the only thing I REALLY don't like is that my tank wears a thong... I keep submitting feedback on the issue everywhere I can, but I don't have much hope that the art department will take pity on those of us who think a tank in a bikini is stupid. On the other hand, my rogue's leather armor is both attractive and not a bikini...

I agree that the Innmates are the best guildies! Unfortunately, I do not have either the time nor the energy to volunteer to run even a tiny guild. I have to get a CCNA in less than six months and have an unscheduled requirement to get a CCNP Security certification -- that's 9, count 'em, NINE certification exams... I'm 53 years old people!!!!! I'm planning on retiring in 5-7 years.... Waste of time and money in my opinion. I've played with OTG in a couple of games and they are good peeps too. I think they'd take me back... don't recall doing anything terrible under their tag. So, whatever y'all decide is fine by me. Guardian, Defiant, Innmates, OTG...

I've been in both closed beta weekends so far and have an invite for this week's event. I put in a preorder at Gamestop. The game is definitely not revolutionary -- nothing there that hasn't been around the block, but it fits together nicely and is very well-polished, at least at levels 1-20. The soul system is an interesting way of allowing you to mix up your abilities within your "calling" (warrior, mage, cleric, rogue). Not real multi-classing, but I can be a tank with a DPS pet if I want. The rift system one ups WAR's public quests by making them dynamic rather than statically located. Quests are quests, but I enjoyed reading the lore -- which you can skip in almost all cases because there is a "Tell me all about your problem..." button if you do want the details. Take a look if you haven't: http://www.riftgame.com/en/.
