Brasse, it's called Quicken during the year to keep track of those pesky "receipts", and then Turbo Tax to do your taxes.  Easy as the pushing a button, well, close enough!    Grin

Good luck with your taxes, Brasse.  I had to do (or supervise) four sets of taxes this year, so I feel your pain.   Not fun!  But they're done and filed.   The refund cheques have even started arriving.  The refund cheques go a long way to ameliorating the pain of filling out all of those forms :-)

Best of luck to you,

Thales

I'm glad I'm not the only procrastinatior out there.  I did get mine filed, but only at the last minute.  And instead of having the incentive of a refund, I get to write checks to the federal and state govenments in addition to the paperwork.  FUN.

I do believe Brasse was so excited about doing her taxes, and oh so happy, that she forgot to sign off on her article that goes with the comic.

Poor thing, it looks like you need to beg and plead with Wren to help out, since she has organized and filed everything already! <hides under her own mound of receipts> (you'll never find me now! lol)

Huh Dear, dear Atherin... what are you on, and where can I get some? Wink

Reflex does our taxes by computer, filling out, filing, everything, and I just have to sign it.   Which is good, because I would have NO idea what to do.

We pay to have ours done, done early, and direct deposited. We had our refund by sometime in Feb. *not gloating or anything*  Tongue

The sad truth is you can make a lot of it up.  Not hideous deductions.  But a $50 program makes every dollar line up the way the wee likkle fairies like it and even if the blorkle English come and talk personally to you, you have the math done right.

Bhinder, get yourself ONE folder for each each year and put each year's stuff into that folder.

As much as you and I might yell at each other about Canada becoming Big Brother, or you telling me the USA already *IS*, the U.S. tax code is a little like a big jerk saying, "DO THIS!"

He has no conscience, no morals and no right to actually exist at all.  And his breath is bad.  But if you wilt in his face and say, "Yes, sir.  Here's all my money, sir," he will 39 times out of 40 ignore you.  Actually, 178 out of 179.  Still, that makes the U.S. tax code an unholy terror that was never actually voted in by the citizens of these states and I'm sorta ashamed of it.  The trouble is, much as I hate it, it played a big part of helping the U.S. fund World War 2.

Stupid Nazis!  If it weren't for them, maybe we could have proven that Roosevelt and his anti-Constitutional policies were just WRONG!

Odd how real life gets in the way of Rush Limbagh perfection.   Smiley

EDIT: The Roosevelt/Limbaugh stuff was (sorta) kidding.  The putting stuff from one year into one folder was absolutely spot on.  You use the TaxCut program for 3 reasons:  1) It looks good; 2) it adds correctly; 3) your refunds come back quickly; 4)  (Yes, I said 3, this is 4) The clown auditing you is no smarter, wiser or blessed than you.  You have a computer program backing you up.  PLUS, the Tax Cut people say they'll back you up.  I wouldn't trust that any further than I could throw Abe Lincoln.  But if your math is correct, at least you can enjoy the moment when you tell the little toad, "Yes, going to Las Vegas was a business expense."

I'll bet that was the defense that Wesley Snipes and his attorneys used. Didn't do 'em much good! Tongue

Bah!  Just do what I do:  file several extensions Smiley  I wish that I didn't have to but I have several businesses in 3 different states.  Two of them, MN and WI, ahve incredibly complex tax codes for small business owners.  The one saving grace I have in all of it is that I have very little paperwork to keep track of.  I agree with Kwee.  The system is a nightmare that basically says "Do this or else!".  But I have a good accountant so I try not to worry too much about it Smiley

I had a small business for about 3-4 years, which I folded last April (End of the Tax Year here in UK).
I tried several Book keeping programs, but in the end found making amendment's a pain and went back to the old paper spreadsheet method with a couple of ledgers and a cash notepad.

A pain at year end, but very easy to make any changes, and keep track of receipts etc when each receipt pasted onto a sheet for each months transactions and filed with the monthly spreadsheet.

Okay I did not have hundreds of receipts like some businesses so found it manageable and not too much of a chore if I kept on top of it Weekly and Monthly. Alas the Craft industry in this country makes it hard to break even and make a profit so I slowly took on part time delivery jobs to subsidise the crafting, until I was doing more driving than Crafting and folded it.

I even got a small tax refund on my last return as I had been on too high a tax code with the driving jobs. So a small bonus there.

In the future I will do my Crafting in my spare time and sell stuff on casually or via galleries (Though some want horrendous percentages so have to be choosy on who I deal with).

All in all for the small amount of receipts over a period of a month I found the hard books easier and less trouble, but I know for larger turnovers software is a must.
