Hi there  Smiley  I've been enjoying this website, specifically the comics, for a while now, though I haven't ever said anything before!  And today I decided to try out the free trial of EQ2, which I will be installing in just a few.  I've been playing LOTRO since December, but that is my experience with MMOs!  Does anyone out there have any advice for a more than just relative newbie?  (Especially class-wise.  My main in LOTRO is a 50 hunter, and I am drawn to ranger, but are the two classes that similar?)  For anyone who answers, thanks in advance!

I had a friend once who played a lot of EQ, and I've heard a lot of good things about it.  I'm looking forward to trying the trial out!

There are 7 classes in WOW, and 24 in EQII, so the more generalist class types (like Priest and Hunter) are split into more specialized classes.

Hunters and Rangers both use bows, and in that, they are similar. Ranger is the only true bow-dependent class in EQII, though several others can use them. Rangers are a 'good' aligned class. The 'evil' counterpart is Assassin, which uses bows only a little, and relies on close melee combat as a rule.  Both employ poisons on weapons for increased damage, debuffs or other effects.

However, Rangers (and Assassins) in EQII cannot tame permanent pets like Hunters can. If you really enjoy pet classes, then the following may appeal:

THE SUMMONERS - pets that can tank, do dps, cast spells
Conjuror: Pets of earth, air, fire and water realms, elemental spells, the 'good' class.
Necromancer: Undead pets, the 'evil class', disease and poison spells, the 'evil' class.

THE ENCHANTERS - lots of crowd control, substantive buffs, debuffs, a bit of direct spell damage
Illusionist: A summoned 'mirror image' pet that casts the same spell line as you do, the 'good' class.
Coercer: Coerce mobs into being your temporary pet (mob retains its original class and damage type), the 'evil class.

Rangers and Furies can tame temporary animal pets, but these are not used as a mainstay of the class.

Lotro hunters cant tame pets neither, so they are similar in that.

I'd highly suggest checking out the "Newbie Yard" on the official forums--there are ALL sorts of discussions of the differences between the classes and a really great thread called "Things I wish I'd known earlier" (which I didn't read until I had been playing for about a year and I still learned things from it).  Welcome to EQ2!
