So how much PvP is there?

I hear that is all this game is.... forced PvP. Can the game be played without PvP, or is it required to level and gain anything?
Just curious...

well, pvp is completely optional so far. It is definitely a viable way of leveling up, but it is by no means required. How far you get when you max out your level without pvp remains to be seen. I haven't gotten that high yet.

The PvP is entirely optional on the servers we play on. There ARE full-on PvP in all zone servers available.
I am not a huge PvP fan myself, but the few forays I've made in WAR have been a lot of fun. The game does not take itself too seriously, and neither do the players. It's a great free-for-all body count, and yeah... fun. Go figure. =)

Hello, my name is Mandie and I'm an RvR convert.
I've tried pvp in ALOT of games, EQ, EQ2, WoW, LotRO and never gone back a second time, the angst, the stress, the BS little 12yo attitudes. I don't have much time for any of that.
So it was quite a bit of a shock that I actually enjoy the RvR in Warhammer.
Sure you can avoid it if you like but you'll be missing out on a whole lotta fun, some really good equipment and a bunch of xp.
The thing that makes RvR different (imho - and I've only done the early scenarios - can't comment on endgame) is that they're short sweet little events. Each of the first Scenarios only last 15 minutes or until one team kills 500 of the other. Which means you don't get the whole angst thing happening coz there's simply no time and nobody's reading chat anyway. There's no real death penalty, no armor damage or costs like that and no exceptional reward for killing anyone other than a number on the little scoreboard at the end. So you don't get these people trying to be heroes or complaining about dying over and over.
I'd recommend a Core or Roleplay server though, and be mindful of the balance between Order and Destruction coz that'll impact your wait times.
That's my 2 copper
Mandie the Pincushion.

I am only level 12, but so far I have only done PvP a few times, and by my own choice to queue for the scenarios. So far I have no complaints, and I am not much of a PvP person.
Are you tempted to join the ranks of WAR then Navith?

Maybe. Just hard to decide as I can only play one game at a time, and with RotLK coming out next month, I might be so engrossed in WAR, that WoW would be an afterthought.

As everyone else has said, PvP is entirely optional -- at least until the end game. I'm not sure how much there is to do at level 40 besides RvR (not that I'm worrying about that -- never met a level cap I could reach
). That said, the optional PvP is actually FUN. I'm a carebear from way back and I enjoy scenarios and the little open world RvR I've experienced. Scenarios are short and sweet, nobody can trash talk between realms and the action is just a lot of fun.

The double-war-party, 48-person raids into contested territory to take back a keep are freekin' awesome! Especially if you are in the Vent server with the rest of the group. Otherwise, the RvR scenarios are a nice break from questing and you get dropped right back where you left off. It's also nice to join with your friends who are questing in all the other realms and kick some butt for 15 minutes.
And you get access to some really nice gear and helpfull ability enhancers along the way to keep it interesting.

Well, I bit the bullet and bought the game.
The Order server seems to have more low level players (or alts), so their PQ's are always in swing.
The Chaos server seems to be a ghost town at my level. I see maybe 2-3 players ever at my level, so PQ's are worthless (sad I know).
I tried the RvR .. still not for me. I play squishies normally, and while I don't expect them to survive long in PvP, I am always the first target, and barely get a shot off before I am killed. Seems everyone plays a tank, or hybrid tank. Sigh.
The PvE portion of the game is fun though, and the graphics are amazing! Hopefully I can catch up to levels on Chaos where people are actually playing.

Actually, once you level up a little bit, squishies are pretty durable if they have a healer and/or are quick with their roots =)

Roots are very annoying. In theory they are supposed to have a 50% chance to break on damage which is something I have not really seen being on the receiving end of them. Also in theory I believe after a knock back or a root you are supposed to get some kinda buff to prevent chain knock back or chain rooting which also does not seem to be working.
Many times as a marauder I get rooted I blow my root break and even before I can start moving again I am rooted yet again which gets very frustrating. I think eventually they will have to put a short immunity time after a person uses their root break as some classes already have.

BTW, at 20 my DoK just got a morale ability to break roots and then ignore subsequent roots (and bleeds too I think) for the next 30 seconds or so. It's a nice little ability but it is waaaaaay up at the third moral bubble
