Age of Conan - Lost in Translation
Brasse -- 2008-05-27 17:59:57
A few days after launch, May 23rd, in fact, FunCom decided to designate official servers for "Francophones des ameriques"; basically, French-speaking people living in North America.
This made Zug, the server I play on, officially French Speaking for the PvE crowd (Doomsayer gets the official nod for PvP).
Unfortunately, there were already a fair number of asshats playing on the Zug server, and you'd think that the universe had just come to a screeching halt when this came to light.
When some people started speaking in French in /OOC, and news of the official announcement was passed around, it was suddenly as if Crom himself had risen from the darkness and crushed all of Hyboria in his great fist.
Why don't they play on the Euro servers??!!?
Because that is across the ocean and they can get a better connection speed in North America, where they live.
If I had known this server was gonna go all Frog, I woulda started somewhere else!!
See ya.
No, the English speakers do not have to speak French. Nor are they being loaded onto rafts and being set afloat. For the most part, the French speaking people also speak English, and generally far better than the knuckle-draggers protesting the "invasion" of "their" server.
Guess what, people: FunCom, the parent company, is in Scandinavia. WE are the foreigners in this game. Just wait till we start playing games on a truly global scale and we'll feel fortunate when someone is good enough to designate an 'official English-speaking server' for us... because let me tell you, we are outnumbered.
After the initial name-calling and rhetoric encompassing surrender, trying to find France, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick and Maine on a map, and following an inevitable and interminable discussion of hockey, things settled down.
You'd never know that there WAS a controversy now. Things are as they always were.
Except for the hockey talk.
Crom help me.
Hockey.

ps. For those of you wondering, the French-Stygian lass says:
Panel 1. "Hello! Would you like to join a guild?"
Panel 2. "I am from Quebec."
Panel 3. "Wow, what a jerk." (or equivalent), followed by "Can I have your stuff?"
(thanks to DT-Choco of Zug for his help on the translation!)
