An Ass By Any Other Name
Brasse -- 2008-09-14 09:42:10
I have played a lot of MMOGs. So many that I probably qualify for special assistance, counseling and retraining to prepare me for re-entry into normal society.
I was in for a surprise when I loaded up the Warhammer Online beta. I expected it to be a decent game, assuming that Mythic learned a lot from Dark Age of Camelot (they did), and hoping that with Games Workshop's intensive involvement they would capture a lot of Warhammer Fantasy's look and feel (they did).
What surprised me was when I tried to create "Brasse" and was... DENIED.
The message was "You have entered a duplicate or invalid name," so at first I thought someone else already had a "Brasse" on the server I randomly chose, and I prepared to hire assassins... but no. Every server I tried, I was DENIED.
DENIED, DENIED, DENIED.
Then it dawned on me. Within my perfectly perfect Dwarven name Brasse are contained the three evil letters A-S-S. Yep, done in by a part of my name. I tested this by trying a number of names like Brassar, Brasset, Brasseroo... all DENIED because of three little letters that were perfectly innocuous in the context of these names.
So when WAR goes live, expect to see me online as "Brash" or "Brazze" or "Iwantmyname", and petitioning repeatedly till someone gives me my REAL name or the GMs ban me for harrassment.
