Bring on the Gauls!

Brasse -- 2007-03-15 20:15:48

MINIONS! As noted in my Gods and Heroes article (found here), minions are a godsend, if you'll pardon the pun. The few I got to test drive worked well, and I am SO into the collection thing; I am already wondering how many I could press into service.

As you can tell by the general tone of my gameplay reviews, I am a fan now, but still a cautious one, as befits a Dwarf. There is a big difference between playing a set demo path and playing the full-fledged game for a week. Still, Gods and Heroes; Rome Rising looks sound in style, design and mechanics, and moreover, it looks interesting.

I look forward to poking more fun at the game as it moves closer to release!

Well, I guess this comic is going to be a bust, and that this commentary will go even farther off the Gods and Heroes topic than my Boston Legal missive did...
*imagine a heavy Dwarven sigh here*

I could not believe that Alluvian did not know who ASTERIX was. My waving fingers at the comic above and lamely repeating, "Asterix, you know? ...ASTERIX!" did not cause any flicker of recognition, merely the question, "Are they Canadian?", at which point I was ready to write him off as brain dead.

Just before I went to sell his organs off on eBay, I decided to check with Wren and learned that she did not recognize the name either, till she googled it and then allowed for some vague, "I've heard of it."
*another sigh billows forth*

Asterix is one of the most beloved comic book series of my early adolesence, although I only ever owned a few of them, because they were printed on really nice paper with really nice inks and therefore too expensive for me in those days.

French in origin, and created by Goscinny and Uderzo, Asterix has been translated into more than a HUNDRED languages - and my partners did not know what I was talking about.
*pulls beard*

I loved the clarity and mastery of the art style, the wonderful puns and rampant silliness throughout.
I like the quote from a fansite which states, "The difference between the cultured person and the non-cultured person is that the cultured person only picks her nose when nobody can see. The cultured person doesn't read comics when others see either, of course. The only exception is that one can dare being seen with Asterix." Heheh, I bet the originator of that one is French.

Some people have expressed surprise that the series is as popular as it is, given the number of "insider" jokes that parody French politics, but the truth is that the comics are great even if you have no clue who they are really referring to. Then there are those that read chauvinism, racism, etc. into it... give me a break, people. It is above all, a semi-historical parody of life. In the end, I am convinced that all art is political, and that some are just more overt than others. No reason comic art cannot express editorial opinion (and be misinterpreted as the audience sees fit, of course)!

I understand that Asterix was first published in 1961, which makes them older than I am.
Sadly, Goscinny (the writer) died in 1997, but Uderzo (the artist) is carrying on, at least for now, although many say the books are not nearly as good since the loss of the original writer.

I am going to add the entire series to my birthday and Christmas wish list, and hope that Alluvian is paying attenion. So there!

If you are not familiar with the series, I hope that you get a chance to check them out. My favorite is "Asterix and Cleopatra." I want the original version of that again, the one that mentions "15 beer" on the cover!

As I worked to redraw three main characters here (Asterix, Obelix and Dogmatix), it reminded me again of how far I still have to go as a comic artist. Odd how one can do very well at representational art in many mediums, and yet struggle with the concept of comics, hmm? =)

Anyway... I am going to get me some Gaul minions in G&H, just on principal!

Talk more about these comics you've never heard of on this thread.
