Time Sinks = BLEH

Brasse -- 2007-03-27 11:51:34

Ok, just a placeholder comment here, I will think more clearly in the morning!

much time elapses
Much better. Coffee brewing, dogs walked and fed, eyes pried open. I had to post at least a placeholder comment last night in order for the comic to be picked up on RSS feed.

I agree wholeheartedly with Wren's sentiments regarding time sinks in games. Surely we have outgrown the feeling of achievement one gets by spending eight hours killing grey mobs in hopes that the ONE green named mob will spawn.

In old EQ, I was once interviewed for G4 TV, and one of the questions was "what was your favorite expansion?" The answer came immediately - Planes of Power. Not because of all the high level planes, but solely for the incredible Plane of Knowledge, which acted as a crossroads to quickly travel between all of the major connection zones of Norrath. We were finally able to get groups together in less than 30 minutes. When all you have is an hour to play, you do NOT want to spend half of it trudging alone or looking for a port.

I think I am done with Raids too, at least the traditional sort which result in plank-ass from sitting in my chair for too long. Sure, leave them in for guilds and people who really like that particular brand of pain, but, as friend Forrkie said, give us alternate paths to complete quests - even if they take longer, but can be achieved by a few people.

I LOVE the concept of MMOGs, but really, I would be more than happy with MOGs that simply support a lot of people. Drop the massive, because my personality resists being in huge groups. My favorite play groups are 3 to 6 people. Period.

At this stage of my life, I no longer have the time for sinks, and will look for games that make it easier to jump right in and play. Keep me interested by offering interesting tasks, a home to upgrade and decorate, cool things to see and do.... NOT with a requirement to spend 7 hours waiting or trudging.

Add mini-games, puzzles or time restrictions (a la "you must come back when the shattered moon is overhead") if needed to make an achievement more meaningful. Make key mobs dynamically spawn when the time is right, not when you have camped a spot on the ground for 4 hours.

I know EQII has moved a long way toward this sort of game, while still leaving raids in for those who love them... now if they can just give us workarounds for those quests that require raids... if not, I will learn to do without the cap of uberness, I guess!

ABOUT THE COMIC:
Oh yeah, the comic! Well, the first two scenes are self-explanatory; the last refers to Wren's recent visit here. It really was her idea to go to the ceramic painting place, I swear! She knows from our three previous forays that I always, ALWAYS make an incredibly complex pattern and it takes an age to complete (especially for the areas one wants to appear opaque, which need three coats).

Pick the annoying time sink of your choice and bash it here.
