LotRO - MORIA: The Waterworks

Brasse -- 2009-03-06 13:19:37

Lord of the Rings Online has quietly established itself as a lasting presence on the MMOG field. No easy task in these times when the newest "shiny" distracts people, and there are so many new shinies to be had. So what's it got that other games haven't got?

Well, lore, for one thing. Plenty of games attempt lore and storylines, and they usually come off as shallow, contrived and ultimately, unengaging.

You can certainly and correctly assert that LotRO has an unfair edge in this area, solidly based as it is in Tolkien's literature. The thing is, Turbine takes the tales of the venerable author and builds on them, carefully, respectfully and with tremendous skill.

I keep saying it every year: the world just "feels" right. The stories of the game characters, the quest text, the terrain, the epic book progressions... they are extremely well-conceived and well-presented.

I still give this game two pies up.

You can now get the collector's edition of Moria for $59.99 (or regular edition for just $29.99); both include expansion, two new classes, and the FULL game. Founders can extend the special lifetime membership offer to ten people, and dude... I am a FOUNDER. I am so happy to have the lifetime subscription, and never look at a monthly fee again. It is very freeing.

So where was I? Oh yes. MORIA. Or as we Dwarves call it, Khazad-dum, or simply... home.

The setting for the latest expansion to LotRO (for levels 50+), Moria is a huge place, built as it was by enterprising Dwarves like myself. We do earn our beer, you know!

In the game, Moria offers a huge and satisfying sense of scale and depth; there is a lot of wandering about to be done, and all those who wander are not lost... as long as they have a map in hand. This marks the first time that my newly completed map of a zone is paired with a comic. I was really impressed by the Waterworks when I first peered into Moria so long ago, and that is why I chose to lay it out here.

MORIA: THE WATERWORKS

Click directly on the map to access a larger (and printable) version. I apologize that the link to "quests in Moria" will come up blank, likely for some time. If you are interested in documenting quests for our site, please visit our LOTRO Quest Entry page!

I believe I'll do Silvertines next, because I spent way the hell too long LOST in that place. Lost and often dead, which is no way to tour Moria.

Thanks to Meghan "Patience" Rodberg, Community Manager for Lord of the Rings Online, for the inspiration for this comic. We all know someone like Tyborr. Some of us are married to people like him. Some of us ARE like him (squints at Quinatan). Tyborrians are the leading cause of alcohol as a coping mechanism in gaming circles, but we love them anyway.

ps. I admit that I found out firsthand that water does NOT always break a fall in LoTRO.

Ooh! The Silvertine Lodes! Yes, please do! I'm sure i'll wear that one out a lot faster than I will this spiffy new waterworks map.

I had already checked in here this morning, but when i logged on to LotRO, the launcher told me you had a new map, so I had to come see. :)

By the way, just the other night I directed one of our 60s to your Goblim-town map, as she was looking for her last button. The map doesn't indicate which buttons are where, but I have annotated my printed copy, so I was able to tell her which map icon was the one she wanted.

Perhaps I should annotate your map for an update.

Another absolutely beautiful map! I had thought you had given up mapping Lotro - I am so glad you have started again!

You might be interested to know that the next game update includes a better map coordinate system...

Did you see the announcement about this map and your site in the Lotro launch window?! - Always nice to get a little recognition.

Now where did that donate button go... ;)

Cheers!
Puk of the Crescent Order on Silverlode

PS; you need a tiny update of your legend - the 'Fell Scrying Pools' were removed from the game long ago.

So... umm.... how do I ingratiate myself enough to get one of those lifetime membership offers?

*Coughs politely and bats her eyelashes in the most endearing way possible.*

Oh wait, this is Brasse. What kind of beer do you want?

You can extend the Founder's subscript? Did not know that. I can't even find anybody to give my buddy keys to. That's too cool that it's posted on the login screen! I had to play tonight, just so I could see that! Yeah, that's why....
I've barely entered Moria, but what I saw was awesome, and I promptly lost all sense of direction. This is bad, cuz I'm a Hunter. *blush*

Great map - and so good to see you get the recognition on the LOTRO loading screen!

But please remember the Founder referral thing is US only. Codies have chosen not to offer something similar to us Europeans. (Although we can get a £5 Amazon voucher *roll eyes* )

The Silvertine Lodes tracks are complicated :) but any chance of Foundations of Stone afterwards? That's why I get by far the most lost, even on my Burg! Pesky trolls!!

Duly noted, Foundation of Stone after Silvertine!
