There are a few things I like a macro for. Even for my healer, like to tell all healers in the healer channel who cast a cure curse on whom. It helps a great deal to avoid wasting a cure on these cure or die fights.
But on the other side I ignore the raid chat most of the time with all the COB, POM, Dispatch macros in it.

I played FFXI for some time and not only did folks have macros for everything but you could put sounds in there, too. If you were unlucky enough to be in a group grinding xp with these guys the entirety of battles basically ended up sounding like a pinball game. Ding! Whistle! Dong! Higher pitched ding! Beep! <Schtoom has left the party.>

I like the flavour, but not in group chat, emote or /say is fine (and definitely -not- in /shout). As a DPSer, some of the messages indicating what's up when can be helpful if I have a particularly big spell I want to use as a trigger for them or need the tank to be in his uber-y wont lose agro fer nuthin' mode (but mostly, as a coercer, I'm going all out on my own pattern anyway).
I do have a macro on a few of mine for group, but that's 'cause I don't cast them -all- the time. Like my give the who group uber-y power all at once and the de-hate single cast spell I have on a /tell macro so the person getting it knows he/she has it (I have what it does because not everyone, outside of raiding, knows).
I'd like to put some macros to /emote again for at least my own enjoyment (flavour text), but.. as long as I am raiding with whom I raid, I would need to have 2 sets of hotbars to be able to do that.

In general, the only time I ever used macros was for pulling back in EQlive. I remember it being important for enchanters in that game as well to let you know what had been crowd controlled so you didn't wake it up.
These days it seems less necessary. What is crowd controlled? See the fluffy white sheep on in the middle of the battle? Leave that alone. And with Vent folks can easily let you know when pulling or when that special long cooldown spell has been used up.
Surely I don't need to know when people have cast buffs on me. I can look at my own screen and see which buffs I have and what effect they are having on me, thanks.

/e makes notes not to include Brasse in the Gravitas rotation while raiding :-P
Seriously, I have only 3 major macros I use: Gravitas, Rezzing and CoB. Most times I use macros not just to let a healer know Gravitas is being casted but also to inform other dirges who may (or may not) be casting it as well so they cast it on another healer. I see some macros as being helpful, such when you have two or more classes who can rez all trying to target the same character instead of moving on to someone else who needs a rez even more. CoB is really more in /group and most times I don't even set it off unless I'm asked/told to keep it constant. Heck, if I wasn't told to make macros for certain spells, I'd have a ton more space in my socials macros. *lol*

I think my least favorite had to be the ones I saw in WoW where the party's damage #s were pulled, tabulated, and posted to the group after each skirmish. Of course, this was done by a guy running a class that did a lot of DPS. Yanno, when we needed a tank. And they loved to give me advice on how to up my DPS. Which was true, but neglected things like me being the only one in the group that could prevent a runner from grabbing adds. And that I was mostly busy with blasting what got past the alleged tank to bash the healer.
Preventing party wipe isn't about DPS! And nobody CARES if the rogue did the most damage... it's what they DO.
Sorry, that makes me feel a bit rant-tastic. ^^;

I fully recognize that some text macros are essential. I especially like the ones that run along the lines of, "HUGE FIREBLASTING AOE OF DOOM INC IN 5 SEC - GET OUT! GET OUT!! GET OUT!!"
And Dannyboy... yep, that is another thing that pushes my Darfy buttons: Parse This!

Only macros I have/use in combat are a) A pulling macro, b) my monk has a macro when I use Peel (to let others know I have the aggro for a bit). And for shits and giggles, a) my wizzie has a macro with Maxwell's equations when casting Fusion (I have it without the macro as well, for real raids.) and b) my Swashie macros 'XYZZY' when I evac, for the older gamers out there.

I'm probably worse. I keep my texting trap shut on LOTRO, but been know to announce "Healing this, healing that" on Vent for the paranoid androids in the raid....which would contribute to the cheerful chaos and lag. There must be people on Landroval who hate me for that...
Ever since I rolled up that minstrel, I've been avoiding healing classes like the plague...

Well ok... if you have a Very Important Spell that only lasts 15 seconds and makes the target like GOD, announce it so that they can take action and separate the heavens from the earth, let there be light and so on.
I don't need to hear when you cast a heal. Actions speak louder than words, dude. And I like buffs as much as the next Dwarf, but I don't need you to tell me all the details and numbers, any more than I need to read the ingredients label on the Oreos package.
So seriously. Shut up. Raids are hard enough to endure without your SPAM.
I actually had a few macros in my day (hey, tryin' ta fit in wid da homies, y'know?), but I deleted the last one yesterday. I felt liberated.
Besides, it's reaaaaallly embarrassing if you launch your spell of uberness at the wrong time or on the wrong target, while loudly announcing it to the entire raid. Yah, I know you've done that, because I have seen it, and snickered.
And for those of you who macro statements to accompany your big damage hits? Special place in hell for you, friends.
I'll let Wren tell you about her Ray of Disintegration spell, otherwise known as "don't you cast that in our group or we'll all kill you because don't you know it lowers overall DPS in favor of one larger single hit you freaking newb." Longest spell name ever, by the way.
Speaking of Star Trek, as I do in the last panel, there is a new blog called Geekswag, written by Victor Wachter. He is a Star Trek geek, and his site clearly demonstrates that... but his topics cover the full range of nerd interests, and are worth a read.
Ok Victor, send my my five beers.
And speaking of Geek, if you haven't been to "It's All Geek to Me" lately, it's high time you got caught up on Coyote's ramblings. I am a big fan, even though he owes me at least ten beers now.
Besides, if you keep busy with these other sites, you won't notice so much when I have to skip a comic. And I have, and I will. Many changes are coming in my life this month, and I'll post as soon as I can do so. All good, no worries.
