Might want to start saving up for a different set of digs...the current living arrangements is not going to work out for you, Brasse. Especially if the landlord is a die hard do it yourselfer...

OUUU! OUUU! OUUU! I know, I know! Call on me! CALL ON MEEEEE!
You could get an RV and park at a KOA. Just think! You could drive the Winnebago to SOE - the great leviathon lumbering along Coast Drive. It would be a a supreme statement!
Heh! (Um, what? Ah yes - the devil made me say it)

gads! Could you have had a worse 1st week? wait.. no.. I can think of a few worse things.. don't wanna go there.
In my poverty days when I lived in Oakland (just inside the edge of the bad part of town), the place I was in was built.. umm... long enough ago that power was put in a few decades later. I discovered the refrigerator and the bathroom were on the same breaker by blow drying my hair one day.. (no food was lost, I figured out the lack of loud hum from the ancient fridge, circa 50s, meant it wasn't on).

Ack! There is absolutely NO WAY I could tolerate those kind of conditions! I'm impressed with your fortitude, Brasse!
My years in the military had an opposite effect on me than you might expect: I absolutely HATE "roughing it". I got dirty for my country. I ain't doing it now as a civilian.
Does your new place really have such funky green wallpaper and shower curtain? That alone could part of your problem (*smile*).

*HUGS* Brasse!
If you need help finding some pet friendly rentables or such within 10 miles or so of SOE, lemme know. I can think of three off the top of my head (I'm in Poway, about 10 miles from SOE headquarters <G>)

I know that kind of place. And newer complexes are hideously expensive (built right at the peak of the housing market, the landlords are holding massively overpriced mortgages on them).
You might want to wander over to the SWG area and talk to Dean Graf. He should be able to give you some pointers on areas that're reasonable to live and not overpriced. I've found east of 5, north of El Cajon Blvd, south of MCAS Miramar to be not bad, although stuff in the shopping area of Mission Valley tends to be pricey.

All was not sunshine and roses.
Well ok, it WAS sunshine, and I have a slightly scorched appearance to prove it. Even SPF 75 and darting from shadow to shadow cannot save me from the damnable Day Star.
The suite I rent is part of a private home, owned by a 74-year old die-hard do-it-yourselfer. I feel like I am living in the home version of Apollo 13.
I was forewarned of potential power issues when I discovered that there was not one three-prong outlet in the suite, which dates from the 50s. Undaunted by this, I went to the store and picked up some adaptors.
Soon after, I discovered the limitations. Air conditioning, high-powered gaming rig, microwave. I can have any two of these three on at one time. Or else. Vwwwwwwoooooooooooom.
The sounds of silence accompany the rapidly growing temperature. To my credit, it only took me a few tries to work out several combinations of modern, power-hungry items that I could run at the same time without blowing the breaker.
Two days after I moved in, I was in the middle of a shower when the water just... stopped. I had just put shampoo in my hair. I stood there for a few minutes, hoping that I was hallucinating, perhaps suffering a flashback or something. However, I remembered that I never did do those sorts of drugs, so eventually I had to towel off as best I could (let me tell you, leaving shampoo in your hair is a really nasty feeling), put on a modicum of clothing and went to see the landlord.
He and his DIY friend from the next block had decided to do a bit of plumbing to hook up the washing machine. When the creatively soldered pipeworks sprang leaks, they shut the water off. I took a towel and wandered across the road to the park, where I managed to rinse my hair off in the sink in the public washroom.
I had dishes in my sink, which I'd planned to wash after my shower. Instead, I awoke the next morning to a flood of ants. It looked like a scene from a horror movie, with three different varieties of hungry six-leggers roaring along a superhighway to my sink.
Half a gallon of Windex later, I placed the dishes inside plastic bags and stuck them outside to await the return of civilization. Yeah, they smelled like hell by the time I could deal with them again, but it was better than the giant ant farm I had going.
The water was off for two days. TWO DAYS. I suddenly felt like I'd landed on Arrakis. Yucko, man. I brought in drinking water for Brasse (the dog) and myself, but I had to use the washroom facilities across the road so many times that I was afraid I'd be mistaken for one of the vagrants.
Thankfully, the plumbing issue was resolved before I had to show up for work at SOE on Wednesday. It might have been a very short career else, unless I managed to find a desk well downwind of everyone.
Stupid Kalifornia.
I love it here.
