While scanning the immense "why is the server down during our head-start" thread, I came across a great theory that I have to re-post here:

OK, I think we found the cause of the crash. Preparing a patch now.

There are some specific game design reasons why finding Sulu has become such a gigantic meme/joke. I confess that the first time I played the game in beta, even I had trouble finding him. (I also had trouble finding Memory Alpha.)
But of course, when afforded the anonymity of MMO chat, many people prefer to be insulting and cruel in their responses, rather than trying to help each other.
Also, as much as I love to see innovation in MMO design, I have to admit that UI design that strays too far from the 'standard' bugs me, too!

PS Can you please tell the powers that be at SOE that there are a LOT of us that hate, Hate, HATE the changes that have been made to the combat in Free Realms. WTF were they thinking?

I have no problem with the new FreeRealms combat. Actually it is pretty close to the STO ground combat. Primary attack is pretty standard, secondary attack based on weapon choice. Then STO puts things like flanking and um... other thingy I can't remember the name of. Where one ability sets up another. I can't keep the names these games make up for their systems straight.

Bah, lookit Leslee hijacking my thread!! =)
I'll tell you exactly WTF they were thinking with Free Realms: they wanted to make the combat more little-kid friendly... and it is. Usability testing bears this out.
As far as telling the powers that be, make sure you use /feedback and post on the forums. The powers that be do get that stuff; better yet, they READ it. Honest, they do. Then they make business decisions after weighing in all other attendant factors.
Long-term play stats will bear out whether this helps the game's monetization; if the game is fun enough to keep people playing and make money, it's a win for everyone. Many adults, after initial objections, actually like the new combat. There is certainly a group of people who hate the combat changes, and they may well move on if the game loses the "fun factor" for them, but Free Realms is aimed squarely at the 8-12 year old set, and those are the people who are going to vote on the game's long-term direction, with their allowances. =P
It is certainly a very different kind of game and audience. While I do not work with FR directly, I am absolutely fascinated by the evaluation methods and processes the dev team uses in making decisions... which of course I cannot talk about, lest I reveal trade sekrits.

Now, back to STO: I finally managed to unlock my Klingon last night, and all is well with the world. Editing images into my original post now!

I have no game comments, as I will not be playing this one, but I just had to mention the uncanny resemblance between you in RL and your newest Brasse-lass. Almost freaky, but in a good way. :-)

Brasse -- 2010-02-01 00:03:15
Actually, that Brasse is 26 years younger and 35 lbs lighter than I am. I am giving serious thought to the chin tattoo though... but this one will have a symbiont in her head, and I can't find any locally. Wren tells me that wine does not count as a symbiont.
Character creation in STO is pretty damn awesome (is that a review? pretty sure I'm ok with that line), and they had the robust character building system of Champions Online to use as an example... best character creation evah there.
I haven't run into any TCON folk in game yet. I am sure they're out there!

It darn well better have a good character creator since the core system behind STO is pretty much the champions engine so having a modified version of the champions character creator only makes sense. I will need to pick this up eventually once I get some free time away from mass effect2. I want to make a big purple Gorn character maybe name him bernard.

I agree with Jasia. Uncanny - and somewhat freaky - resemblance. I almost cried photoshop.
TCON's definately out there. You've probably passed or flown with us without knowing. We've got alot of new faces. So many I am myself wishing there was a floating tag over ships so I knew how to spot all these newcomers while engaging in pew-pew. Or should that be sskkkssshhhhissssh-ssskkkssshhhhissssh?
Drop us a line in the new forums, Brasse. We've decided to cap recruitment at 100 peeps, but there's a special seat reserved for you.

I'm still up in the air on whether to play this one or not. I wasn't lucky enough to get into the beta so I have no idea what to expect as to how the game plays. Also, I'll have to have some help working on Jasia to come play in the stars if the game looks good.
For right now I'm still slowly working my way through Dragon Age: Origins which has to be one of the best D&D/tactical combat games ever made. If they would just quit releasing add-ons for it I might actually finish one of these months!

STO: It's really like...
Brasse -- 2010-02-01 01:54:40
Only the last two have anything to do with gameplay. The others have to do with opinion and how MMOG players react to the opinions expressed by others. I decided I'd write my own out here, where I don't have to respond to the in-game rebuttals that appear to be auto-generated by caffeinated baboons. On crack. And steroids.
The server is currently down (still), and has been for almost three hours, which is why I finished a comic today instead of continuing toward my Klingon unlock at level 6. I am watching the little red no-you-can't-play button as I type this, and it looks like I'll have time to deposit a lengthy diatribe here as well.
Disclaimer: Now that I work for SOE, I cannot post anything resembling a game review... so when talking about any particular game, I'll stick to statements of fact and let you infer my opinions. Did I mention the STO server is down?
Anyway... let's look at what players are comparing STO to, or at least the top three.
"This game is just like WoW!" The weirdest and least accurate comment possible, unless by "just like WoW," the player meant that in order to play the game, we enter a username and password, on the internet.
"This game is just like CO!" I have played a lot of Champions Online, and see very little in common. If STO had been made by any company other than Cryptic, I doubt we'd hear this one. Ever.
"This game is just like PotBS!" Ok, I'll agree, if they are referring to the elegant space combat, comparing it to the well-measured sea battles in Pirates of the Burning Sea. But "just like?" No.
There is an underlying constant to all of these comparisons. As gamers, we have come to expect and even demand some degree of uniformity, particularly when it comes to our user interface. Usability testing, when applied correctly, will stomp out, with extreme righteous prejudice, any UI that varies greatly from the norm for a mass-marketed game.
The truth is, we don't like to change our ways, and we want, nay, expect to see health bars, experience bars, hotkey bars and all the other myriad game features where we are used to seeing them. In any new game, most players will first change their hotkey settings to something that they are more comfortable, more familiar with.
Brakk, for instance, will ALWAYS change the movement keys, usually WASD, to his preferred ESDF. Watch his ire rise in games where you cannot change this setting - it is terrifying to behold.
As for me, I play more than one MMOG (it comes in particularly useful when a server remains down). This is becoming the norm, and I'll be the first to admit that every time I switch back and forth, I play a mini-game I'll just call, "WAT DIS DO?" In an MMOG with a very different UI and control system such as Star Wars Galaxies, this game lasts a lot longer than it does when I switch between EverQuest II and World of Warcraft. I do not LIKE this mini-game, it cuts into what little time I have to play these days. As a veteran, I do not like looking like a n00b, having to resort to help files, looking up notes, or the dreaded need to ask in /ooc. I just want to log in and play.
Likewise, you can call the health and mana bars whatever you want. It's still health. It's still mana. Levels are levels. The basic classes are tank, scout, healer, mage. We'll find ways to bring our mindsets to your games. In Star Trek Online I will play a very Dwarfy Tank on the Federation side, and a crazed Mage/Scout on the Klingon Side. This was the inspiration behind today's comic, although RadarX did not send me a screenshot of his character, so I am just guessing at the mayonnaise-average appearance he went for. How close am I, RadarX? =)
So yeah. All MMOGs are similar. Thank the gods for that, and I'll be the first to bring my Qlu'Stiq to bear on the next game designer who wants to reinvent the wheel, at least when it comes to my precious UI.
Qlu'Stiq. Hmmm. Sounds like a good name for my Klingon ship.

Side note: due to Starfleet regulations regarding height and weight, it is really hard to make a proper female Dwarf. I did manage to wrangle a beard though. If the server ever comes back up, I'll post a screenshot here.
The server... "It's dead, Jim."
============== UPDATE =====================================
Woots, at approximately 3:30am, the servers had been up long enough for me to earn the right to create a Klingon (you have to reach level 6 as a Fed, first).
Here are my characters, although I have to reroll my Fed after the game "officially" launches, to take advantage of my deluxe digital edition's Joined Trill race. Brasse will LOOK the same, but have more skills. Yeah, this does make the "headstart" mostly wasted for me, thanks for asking.
Still, my Klingon ROCKS (short, stout muscular and irascible in homage to her Dwarven ancestry), and if you look closely, you'll see that both characters have a wee beard. Best I could do in that universe!
============ MORE UPDATEYNESS========================
I also harbor a sneaking suspicion that this is the EVIL UNIVERSE version of RadarX!
Dude, at least I gave you HAIR. Ya gotta admit that I nailed the dorky part though!
