DA BRAKK: How to be a Troll in STO

Brakk -- 2010-02-06 15:21:33

It has gotten better since the end of open beta, but there is still the constant rumble of the troll going on in Star Trek Online. This is true of any game of course, but I find the standard troll lines so much more amusing in STO because they are so out of place. The game is truly FAR closer to Pirates of the Burning Seas, mostly in good ways.

But I have written this all already and already given my brief impressions of the open beta. I am pretty surprised how fast some of the polish got buffed in. It is hardly a bug free game, but most of my huge issues with the game in open beta have been resolved.

This is largely because I had realistic expectations. Nothing like restarting the game from ground up. Many poor interfaces have been cleaned up, many crippling bugs have been fixed or at least heavily minimized (thigs like spawning as the wrong avatar or getting random bridge officers when you bought them, or crew not beaming down with you). My biggest gripe right now is still the horrendous pathing for the ground AI. They go out of their way to find things in their way. I have concerns about this because frankly, the pathing in Champions is also bad. This is more of a shock since the pathing in City of Heroes is probably the best pathing I have seen to date.

I was going for a three stage increase in the "Where's Sulu" hints, but the first step is just not visible in the web sized comic. The Admiral's Office sign in the back says "Sulu's Office". The funny thing is why this screenshot was so hard to get. The devs have added dozens of mobs that talk to each other in the space station now, and the biggest topic of conversation is where Sulu is. "I hear Admiral Sulu is on board and in the Admiral's Office!". They were spamming this so much it was hard to get a screenshot without one of their chat bubbles in it.

We are playing as well, and are Lifer's :>

It's fun, I can jump in for an hour or 2 and accomplish something, so there is that... I just hope they fix the graphics card overheat problem I seem to have :>

So that will be us that will be shouting "where do I find BRASSE?" since we know where Sulu is ;)

I'm really enjoying STO, but I have to grit my teeth every time I warp into Sector Space. The contrast between the beautifully rendered space environments in the missions (instances) and the ugly Sector Space is just jarring!

I'm also really disappointed that the game doesn't incorporate your avatar being on the bridge of your ship in any meaningful way. That's one of the most iconic images of Star Trek! How could they have overlooked that?

By they way - if you haven't already done so, give the fire extinguisher to one of your ground officers. S/he will randomly pull it out and try to use it against a mob. Which makes me burst into a fit of giggles every time I see it.

Oh, I agree, I hate that warp sector space. It looks AWFUL, and makes no sense at all. I would much rather that screen be mocked up to look like the UI of the ship navigation terminal.

Besides the uglyness, I always wonder why objects are physical in this obvious holographic representation of space. Why can you bump into the imaginary STICK holding a planet in place. Why is that stick even THERE??? This is not a 4th grade planetary diorama.

If I was the god of STO, I would:
1) Fix ground pathing issues.
2) get rid of ugly ugly sector space.
3) Incorporate a COVER SYSTEM into ground combat and make the weapons far more deadly. Cover systems have been a HUGE part of third person shooters for at least 5 years now, and Star Trek is the PERFECT MMO to inaugurate them. The ground combat was all about crouching behind things because one hit and you were toast.

Well I always understood Sector space to be a 3d representation of their star maps... Like on the shows...

I like sector space the way it is, other than pathing issues, AND the annoying pop you into an instance without you clicking on anything *that annoys me to no end*

So far I am only level 11 ish (Lt Commander 1) But I like my Escort ship and my nice bank of weapons... :>

Together Aaremin and I do pretty darned good :>

But that is just be being biased ;>

As for the bridge, I think that will come in time, I would rather have what they have right now, and see things released like bridge and such, as opposed to another year or 2 of waiting... I have faith in Cryptic, to provide a much needed break from the norm as far as online games go, I mean everything I have seen and played has been fairly same ol same ol... You have nice graphics in a game like say Lotro, but then you lost me when it came to soloing, and duoing... Whereas, STO so far we have soloed and duoed everything thus far... Not too hard, not too easy, almost JUUUUSSST Right ;>

Plus, its fracking Star Trek ;>

Just made my way to Commander 1 this morning, and after a brief open beta hitch and the first week live I'm having a decent time of it. Had my big armored-shooty-brick (cruiser) for Lt. Commander and now I have my bigger armored-shooty-brick as well as my ship-made-of-nothing-but-guns (heavy escort). Yes, I had to get both (and have seriously considered picking up the tier 3 science ship to complete the set), because even more so than the character creation, I love tricking out my ships.

I agree completely with the pathing gripes. Having a supposedly intelligent, graduated Starfleet Academy individual get flustered trying to figure out how to go through a door or around a box makes my brain hurt.

Finally, a bit of detail that's just been poking to get through my keyboard about Brasse's trill. Symbiotes go into the torso, not the head. Even the Trill agree that the head is where the rum goes straight to. :P

Yeah, neither of us watched much DS9 or Voyager, so our post TNG knowledge is a lacking. I'll do due diligence and watch it all on DVD once we get back together in SanDiego. Stopped watching both shows after not enjoying the first season of either enough to continue. I was more desperate during TNG where I also did not enjoy the first two years but stuck with it.

I find sci fi series have so many gaping plot holes in them that I really have to buy-in to the actors before I start to forgive all the nagging voices screaming in my head. Sometimes I buy-in faster than others, I don't attribute that to superior scifi, just luck whether I like the chemistry.

I enjoy shows more on DVD or onDemand anyway. Two bad shows in a row is less than two hours, where on a weekly program it is two whole weeks of not enjoying a given show. Much easier for me to forget what I liked about a show and just walk away in a bad rut on a weekly format.
