Brasse's Guide ta FrontierVille Players

Brasse -- 2010-07-11 18:37:03

I have been sucked in by Facebook games from time to time. The better ones have even earned a little bit of my money.

I am currently playing The Agency: Covert Ops (SOE) and FrontierVille (Zynga).

TA:CO brings in interesting story/questlines and some great mini-games (although I truly suck at the running and jumping across rooftops game, and tend to blame the game when I plummet), as well as very low-key crafting and group-based missions. What it lacks is a sense of humor.

I get my funnies in Frontierville, which offers very cute dialog and messaging, as well as collections and quests. Well, not quests really, but more like to-do lists, which at the least offer some direction and reason to talk with and exchange materials with neighbors. Plus you get a cute little spouse and wee baby (whom we'll call "farm labor") to keep you company on the homestead.

Next page I squint sideways at FarmVille...

The great granddaddy of FB game success is still FarmVille, a game that I find utterly, mind-numbingly, boringly inexplicable. It prints money for Zynga and may well be the WoW-killer. It's just plain ugly and there is no real purpose to the "gameplay," unless you create your own. Some "farms" start looking more like cross stitch patterns as livestock, crops and buildings are mashed together to make what look like meaningful images to the astronauts viewing from above.

The bulk of FB games tend to be laggy. This is magnified greatly when I play on my home connection, which is billed as "wireless" but can more accurately be described as "somewhat similar to wireless but at the speed of dialup or maybe slower."

I can honestly load EverQuest zones faster than I can switch from homestead to homestead in Frontierville. Star Wars Galaxies' initial load time is faster than TA:CO. This seems to be a fundamental issue with the platform itself, and one of the reasons I tend to play very few FB games, aside from the fact that they can be MAJOR time-sinks from any point of view.

In a typical Facebook game, you can spend over an hour a day just clicking "gifts" from friends. These are merely cleverly packaged obligations. You feel obliged to open them, and then you feel obliged to send gifts back to your friends, who will then feel obliged to perpetuate the process.

I really like the deep storyline and interesting mini-games offered by TA:CO, and the cute humor and interactions with friends provided by FrontierVille... now I need someone to wrap all those elements up in a fantasy-based, elfink and goblin filled bundle of FB goodness and I am all set. Throw in meaningful groups and a GUILD for bonus points! I am right here, with my disposable income, waiting to support my perfect Facebook game. Please send invite.

And finally, a word to the wise for all of you who insist on playing from work: get a clue and don't publish your achievements during work hours. Your boss is probably on Facebook as well, and their eye is gonna twitch when they see your game updates at 9:15, 10:10, 11:35, 11:37, 11:49... and then you take off for lunch.

Hehe my lil frontier homestead is sort of a combo of pastoral bliss and weird farming. Hehe due to lag my crop fields get really um non organized trying to click xp stars as I am lagging.

I am hoping they do get around to putting in their Oregon trails expansion thing if they can use their current interface to add in play like the old oregon trail game I would be so there.
