My Name is Wren.

Wren -- 2007-05-13 22:40:30

Hey, so, Brasse asked me to make a comment for her wondrous new comic, and I could scarcely refuse. After all, she might strangle me, or strike me down with one of those evil Dwarven stares, or something.

The events depicted are largely true, though the last panel is pure humorific speculation. My online game name for the last 8 years has been Wren, or some approved-by-me form thereof. I chose the name for various reasons. My son's name is Warren, and his nickname is Ren, although that does not seem so feminine. But, stick a 'W' in front, and suddenly it sounds pretty, and, better still, it's the name of a small bird. I have been compared to a bird more than once in my life (lookit her TEENY wrists---she's small as a bird!) (holy cow, look at how much she can eat in relation to her size, she eats like a bird!), so it all seemed fitting. I spent some time agonizing over it back then, and have spent the years following that decision instead agonizing over whether or not I would get MY name in the next game I played.

That is likely my largest source of stress when starting a new game, trying to get the name Wren. It is not uncommon. I have received tells in other games from people who want to know if I am the Wren on such and such server from this and that game. I usually am not, but all of these people are so friendly that I figure the *other* Wrens must be decent people.

Still, that rational thought went out the window when I tried to make my LOTRO character. I did not play much then, and I don't mind blaming it on the extra "n" I had to put in my name (even if that is not the reason). Brasse got to witness first-hand my obsession over the poor *other* Wren. She was a hunter too. I put her on my friends list. I pointed out when she came online. I pointed out when she went offline. I made note of when she leveled. It was really all very...irrational. And obsessive. Yeah.

Still, as in Highlander, there can be only one, and I was determined to be just that one. Brasse counseled me on picking a server that would not have a 'cool' name, since those would likely become extremely popular (as Brandywine is), and I also decided it was not a good idea to go to Elendilmir in Open Beta, for it appeared a flood of guilds would be making that their home. It so happened that the guild we were considering joining was going to the Gladden server, and that seemed safe.

But...still, I must have MY name. I eagerly 'camped' the servers, and knew within minutes when they were live for the first time. I went to Gladden first, and amazingly and overjoyingly (and good for Brasse too, so she would not have to spend the next few years listening to me gripe about not getting my name) I got Wren. I then decided to make a Wren on the other servers, uh, in case we wanted to play there one day, yeah...and was only able to make ONE more Wren. My 'competition' had beat me to it, on all the other servers.

After that, I assumed all would be well. I could be me in my little world, and he/she could be the *other* Wren in their little world, and together we would live in peace and harmony and stuff. Within a half hour of Open Beta, I get a /tell from someone I do not know, that clearly thinks they know me. She says she played with me all during Closed Beta. Or, with the *other* Wren, that is. Further, they were going to meet to make a kinship. Ack! That I did not expect, and we had a decent chat, and she assured me that her friend would not mind that their name had been taken. She also told me that her Wren was very nice, and I believe that.

I have such an urge to talk to her (him?). She's got great taste in names, and we are the same class. Surely she would not be bitter over something so small, really, in the big scheme of things, as an online character's NAME, right? I mean, who would be like that??

happy day,

WREN.
