Bag Lady

Inventory management is always a struggle in MMOGs.
In fact, it's almost a "mini-game" in itself, although I am sure it's not one that many people like.

I often find myself spending an hour or more sorting through my bags and banks on various characters, trying to get a handle on what sort of crap I actually own. Ugh. It's as bad as walking into my garage at home and wondering, "where does all this stuff COME from?" Of course, you will then set yourself to sort it out and decide what you're going to throw out, right? Yeah right. You need it all, and end up keeping it... but I digress!

When you first start an MMOG, you usually get ONE bag, and then the next few decades (in game level years) are spent continually expanding and upgrading your storage space.

Inventory was a big struggle in Asheron's Call and EverQuest, though the latter made huge strides late in the game - I can't speak to AC, for I only played it for about 10 months.

SWG had tons of room for "stuff", limited mainly by the number of lots you could host on your avatar for storage sheds (extra houses). The bank holds 50 items, which can be containers.

So here we are now in Lord of the Rings Online.
The game gives you 5 packs as soon as you create your avatar, but that's IT. No new bags are available through quests, crafting or begging on hands and knees.
There is vault space as well, but it is limited and you cannot place bags in it.

In Lord of the Rings Online, I am a relative pauper in terms of storage capacity. Lacking housing or the ability to store bags in the bank vault means I have made alts expressly for the purpose of storage, which is something I've not done in other games. It is absolutely essential to do so if you plan to craft at all, and especially if you pursue more than one profession within your crafting vocation!

WoW is not much better, but at least you can buy larger bags, and space for bag slots in the bank - the cost increases sharply, the more you buy... but it's space. We'll PAY!!!

Good news at last for LOTRO players came from a Stratics article where it says, "With Book 10, you will have the ability to purchase additional storage containers from your friendly neighborhood vaultkeeper. Each container is equivalent to a single inventory pack in size. You can purchase the first couple of upgrades at any level, but to access them all, you'll need specific levels first."
Here's the linky to the full piece.

Now we need items to stack higher, and existing items to stack even if some are flagged "not for sale".

We desperately need SOME sort of order to the way items are presented in the window when selling to vendors.

We need to get rid of quest items cluttering up inventory...

In my opinion, EverQuest II still has the most generous and well-organized inventory system extant, with enormous bags and boxes available, eight individual bank slots per character and 4 shared slots (shared between your good chars, with another 4 for your ebils), and with a very well designed guild bank with variable permissions. On top of that, EQII offers extremely generous stacking allowances on many items, and best of all, you never have to carry keys or quest items with you. This amazing breadth of inventory was not all realized at launch, nor overnight, but they phased it in over time, always seeking to improve and eliminate the things we players whine about.

Oh hell, enough already. All the devs should trot over to EQII and have a look at inventory there (and particularly how the player sales and inventory are handled on the brokers). Go. Now.

Make Wren happy.
Please.
The whining when her inventory is full is loud, insistent and persistent.

UPDATE: Patience, Community Manager for LOTRO, asked one of the devs for more info on the upcoming vault packs:

"You can buy up to a total of 4 extra storage containers from the
vault-keeper. Each container has 15 spots for items.

Extra vault space is available and priced as follows*:

Level 15: 45 silver
Level 30: 735 Silver
Level 45: 2 Gold 230 Silver
Level 50: 4 Gold 500 Silver

* Terms and conditions may change without notice, pending feedback from
Isengard and QA."

There you go!
