SOE and SCEI: I got nothin'.
Brasse -- 2008-03-13 12:18:58
And here I thought they were already part of the same company. Is this just a change in the pecking order? Did Smed lose a poker game to Hirai and that was all he had to put on the table?
In truth, I do know that SOE has been sorted oddly in the same part of Sony as their movies, which always seemed a bit strange. That they are now organized under the flagship Playstation/gaming line makes more sense, particularly as SOE's newer games (FreeRealms, The Agency) will be released for both PC and PS3. What it really means, in terms of how the companies operate, remains to be seen.
Here are their pretty logos as part of our in-depth media analysis here at TheBrasse.com.
Note 1: they do not look the same.
Note 2: the SCEI logo is on top. This is symbolic of their positions, people, get with it.
Ok, so what does this mean to us lowly gamers?
NO FREAKING CLUE.
Let us read what was posted on the SOE Station forums by Aimee "Ashlanne" Rekoske, Community Relations Coordinator:
"The new structure is designed to mutually benefit both companies by further accelerating the PlayStation business through SOE's strong online gaming expertise.
SOE is currently part of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Under the new structure, SOE will continue to develop its games for the PC and the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3®) computer entertainment system.
The day to day workings of SOE will not change and no employees will be let go. We are thrilled and excited by this change in structure! As Smed was quoted in the press release, "This move is going to broaden our capabilities and expand the development of our products into new and exciting directions.""
What she really means is, "We didn't see any pink slips... today."
Ok, so what does this mean to us lowly gamers?
NO FREAKING CLUE.
Here, read through the actual press release itself and then get back to me:
"SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT INC. AND SONY ONLINE ENTERTAINMENT LEVERAGE EXPERTISE IN THE COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

Ok, so what does this mean to us lowly gamers?
NO FREAKING CLUE... but I strongly prefer my X-Box 360 to the Playstation 3.
In truth, no matter what the media pundits may prognosticate, the truth is that we have NO FREAKING CLUE how it will affect these companies, or us, in years to come, so let's just sit back and watch.
I wish these guys would stop doing this AFTER I've already done my comic for the day. Yeesh.
