Second Gear, The

General Quest

Bavor is in Thorin's Hall, in the main hall, just to the right of the great statue.

Having earned Bavor's trust with finding the first gear, he sends you off to locate the second while he messes around with the one you found. Personally, I don't think he wants you to see him looking completely confused as he tries to figure out the mechanism. Dwarves don't like looking confused.

He offers this advice, "According to the old records, the second gear was hidden in a chest in some old ruins to the south in the Vale of Thrain. The ruins are on the west side of the vale, off the road and across the Vale from Noglond. The records indicate that the chest is on the south side of the ruins."

This is a quest that is best done in a fellowship. Even at 15, I did it with a partner and we had some very close fights.

1. Find the missing second gear.

Bavor has given you reasonable directions. Head out of Thorin's Hall and on south on the main road out of Thorin's Gate. Just before Noglond appears on the left (east) you'll see a signpost showing the road to Orodost, pointing right (west).

Orodost is the ruin Bavor spoke of but did not name. It has been overrun by Goblins, and you'll be fighting all the way. My advice is to progress slowly in order to be prepared for unexpected goblinage.

Head up the long stairway to Orodost. Once you are at the fort itself, stay to the left all the way. You will know you are close when you see two red-painted gateposts. Be sure that you do not aggro the dangerous Dourhand and his friends just to the north of that gate.



Fight your way through the gate and you should see a chest ahead and a little to the right. It contains the second gear.

2. Return the gear to Bavor.

Once you've obtained the gear, skedaddle out of there! Respawn is quite fast in Orodost, so you will probably have to fight a few goblins as you bear right toward the entrance.

Toddle on back to Thorin's Hall and receive your whopping 90c from Bavor. Good thing you're not in it for the money!
