General QuestNewbold's thirst for knowledge is still not sated. He wants to find out "what became of the Men of Cardolan and how the Barrow-downs became home to such fell creatures."
NOTE: If you are prepared, a trio of strong players in the 19-20 level range can complete this quest. For a walk in the park, here was our group makeup: Level 24 Minstrel, level 21 and 24 Champions, level 19 Hunter and a level 20 Guardian. Thank you, Wilma and Cashel!
STEPS:
1) Search the ruins for an ancient chest. Newbold says:
"If you are willing, return to the Barrow-downs and make your way to the ruins of Ost Gorthad in the south. There, search for an ancient chest, where parchments or scrolls might have survived all these long years."
To get to the Southern Barrow-downs from Bree, take the Greenway (the long north-south running road in Bree-land) to the Andrath zone, and head off the road toward the mountain. You will see a barrow-looking thing, which is where you zone in to the Southern Barrow-downs (34.9s, 53w). You will usually have to fight a wight before zoning, and then some more once you enter. After zoning, follow the left wall until you see the ruins before you. The Ancient Chest is at the south end of the ruins on a dais in the middle of a pond (36.2s, 53.9w). Check the map to help guide you. BE WARNED! As soon as you step on the dais, you get swarmed by six wights, levels 16-18. If you die, you will revive all the way back at Tom Bombadil's House. After you have killed all the bad guys, it is safe for you to use the Ancient Chest, which nets you an Ancient Journal.
2) Bring the ancient journal to Newbold Leafcutter. In case you haven't sneaked a peek at it, Newbold fills you in on what it contains, and it is grim. Long ago there was a horrid plague. People suffered "tormenting dreams" of Angmar. If this was not enough, the undead walked the earth, so even death brought no peace. If you ever find more pages to the journal, Newbold, in his never-ending thirst for knowledge, would like them.
3) After you speak with them and select "Finish Now", you get your coin reward, XP, either Skunkwood's Shield, Dagorcham, and you will now be able to take the next quest, Collecting History.
