Searching For Fresh Springs
General QuestAdso is busily working on his new encampment, and is in need of fresh water. Some time previously, one of his hunters accidentally stumbled upon a wonderful spring in the northern reaches of the Old Forest, where the water was particularly clean, clear and refreshing.
He hopes that you will be able to find these springs again, and return with water before his stores run out. He advises that you take some friends, as the Old Forest is a rather dangerous place.
Here is the map you'll need for this quest, complete with tested routes!
1. Find the spring.
The spring that Adso's man discovered is none other than the pool blessed by Goldberry the River-daughter, wife of Tom Bombadil. It is not very far into the forest, but it is indeed wise to travel with friends unless you like the prospect of soloing nasty level 12-14 creatures.
Find Goldberry on the south shore and you'll see a small bucket near her feet. Only ONE person in the party needs to pick up the bucket (which is full); everyone will get credit at the end.
2. Return spring water to Adso.
It sounds simple enough, but this can be tricky for three reasons:
- the time limit
There is plenty of time... unless you get lost and have to backtrack.
- the aggressive critters and trees
Simply being attacked will not cause you to spill the water, but if you die under attack, you fail - this is where your fellowship comes in handy. You cannot fight while carrying water, no matter how many Errol Flynn or Jackie Chan movies you've seen. Route A on our map takes you past much fewer and lower level creatures than running the gauntlet that is Route B. A common tactic for the latter (which takes you by some grumpy elite trees) is to send your fellowship in to draw off aggro while you walk carefully through the area.
- invisible "stumbling blocks."
Normally, you can run along just fine, hopping over roots and rocks while carrying your water. However, there are a few places along each route where no matter how carefully you run, you WILL spill the water. I have roughly defined these areas in orange along the routes included on my map. As you reach them, you must switch to "walk mode" to avoid spilling the water. After you pass the designated areas, you can run once more.
Once you learn the right way to do water-carrying quests, you'll zip right through them!
Adso will be properly grateful when you return to him, and offers a nice selection of rewards to choose from.
Congratulations, you are now qualified to work in a bucket brigade!
