Third Gear, The

General Quest

As soon as you get back to Bavor with the second gear, he has plans to send you after the third! He will continue to tinker with the contraption while you go searching. I think he just likes being close to the pub and out of the cold.

1. Find the missing third gear.

According to Bavor, "the third missing gear was placed in a chest hidden in Emyn Hoedh, the old barrows of the Edain in Haudh Lin, north-east of Gondamon." He does not have the exact location, only that it is rumored to be in the ruins of an ancient crypt in the area. Oh yes... there are barrow-wights wandering about there as well. No wonder he is not going himself!

In passing, he slips "The Third Clue" into your pocket. Save this for a quest further down the road.

Head out of Thorin's Hall, and take the main road south and east. Do not take any turns until you pass Gondamon. Then look at your regional map (default M), and start heading north-east for Emyn Hoedh. The ruins you seek are due north of the U in Haudh Lin.

There are broken stairs on the south side of the ruins, but you cannot get up that way. You must go around the back. Carefully pick off the level 12/13 Barrow-wights and Barrow-wight Archers (one at a time if you are solo!). Enter the ruins from the north, and you will see the chest immediately inside and to the right (west) at 17.9s, 94.0w.

Pull your gear and clue from the chest - and skedaddle out of there!

2. Bring the third gear to Bavor

Run back to Bavor, who is happy to get the third gear and, yep, you guessed it, sets you right on to the fourth gear.
