Terrible Secret of the Salamanders, The

General Quest

Humfrey explains that he hatched some eggs that were "trophies from the Angmarim at the Battle of Fornost." They were small and cute salamanders at first, but then they grew and then they came into fire and then they bred…

NOTE: While this is a solo quest, I would recommend that you bring along a friend or two, which will make the continual burning of your pants from the salamanders more bearable. Brasse, a level 37 Guardian, and myself, a level 39 Hunter, conquered this quest.

STEPS:

1) Defeat the Salamander-dam. Defeat the Salamander-sire. Humfrey tells you:

"Here, take this key! Slay the dam and sire--the other salamanders breed much more slowly. Now that you know the terrible secret of the salamanders, it's up to you to stop them! I truly recommend you do not go it alone…and no, do not look at me!"

You'll be given a key to the Cellar, the door to which is directly north of Humfrey, in the ruins of Tollobel (11.5s, 72w). This is not another zone, and you will only need to go down two sets of stairs to find momma and poppa salamander. The dam will be sleeping, and will wake up when you aggro the sire, so don't go in unprepared. The sire is wandering around, and will aggro you if you are too far down on the stairs. Brasse and I were jumped, but we did fine. If you go in slowly and cautiously, you'll surely kick their butts.

The Salamander-Dam is a level 39 Signature mob with 2,870 morale and 473 power, and the Salamander-Sire is a level 38 Signature mob with 2,751 morale and 459 power. Note that Humfrey was not kidding about them breeding quickly--they will respawn almost immediately after you kill them, so finish them off, then run out!

2) Bring Cellar Key to Humfrey Rumming. Humfrey is irked that the Rangers did not help him beforehand. After you speak with him, select "Continue Quest".

3) Talk to Calatherdir.

4) After you speak with them and select "Finish Now", you get your coin reward, XP, and either Faerinn, Calatherdir's Boots, Calatherdir's Buckler, or Calatherdir's Wall.
